Sikh festival Vaisakhi celebrated in annual Trafalgar Square event

Vaisakhi celebrations returned to Trafalgar Square as Sikh heritage, culture, and community came together at the free annual event.

‘Vaisakhi on the Square’ was organised by the Mayor of London, but co-hosted by disability campaigner Shani Dhanda and radio presenter Sukhi Bart, and featured live music, talks, cultural exhibitions, martial arts, and vegetarian food.

The festival is an important date in the Sikh and Punjabi calendar, as it celebrates the beginning of the Sikh community known as Khalsa, or the birth of Sikh identity.

Vaisakhi London podcast host Manpreet Darroch said: “Having Vaisakhi in a public space like this illustrates that Sikhs are a key part of society, and it gives everyone an opportunity to feel the essence of Sikhism.”

The popular event also saw a live podcast recording, performances from local schools, traditional Sikh art displays, turban-tying workshops, charity stalls like the Jaskomal Foundation, and sports activities with the Sikh Games.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said before the event: “The festival is a wonderful example of how we celebrate the many communities that make our city a beacon of inclusivity, creating a more united and inclusive capital as we build a better London for everyone.”

The festival’s key message was ‘seva,’ which emphasises values of selflessness, community and equality, highlighted by the free food and tea provided.

‘Vaisakhi on the Square’ takes place every year at Trafalgar Square and is set to return in 2026.
